7 Simple Ways to Stop the Afternoon Energy Crash.

7 Simple Ways to Stop the Afternoon Energy Crash

That 2–4 PM slump doesn’t necessarily mean you need another cup of coffee.

Here are 7 simple things you can try to feel more steady throughout the afternoon.

If you regularly hit a wall in the afternoon, you’re not alone.

Maybe you’re fine in the morning, but sometime after lunch your energy disappears. Suddenly you’re reaching for coffee, something sweet, or whatever snack you can find.

And once the afternoon crash hits, it can be hard to get anything done.

The good news? You don’t necessarily need a complicated supplement routine or a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Sometimes a few simple habits can make a noticeable difference.

Here are seven places to start.

1. Start Your Day With Protein

One of the simplest things you can do for steadier energy is to make sure you’re getting enough protein throughout the day.

Instead of starting with a breakfast that’s mostly carbohydrates or skipping breakfast altogether, try building your meal around a good source of protein.

Think:

  • Eggs
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Protein smoothies
  • Chicken or turkey
  • Protein-rich oatmeal

You don’t have to make breakfast complicated. The goal is simply to give your body something substantial to work with.

And if you’re trying to manage those afternoon or evening cravings, getting enough protein earlier in the day can be especially helpful.

2. Drink Some Water Before You Reach for More Coffee

Sometimes that afternoon “I’m exhausted” feeling is made worse by simply not drinking enough water.

It’s incredibly easy to get busy and realize at 3 PM that you’ve barely had anything to drink.

Try keeping a water bottle nearby and making hydration part of your routine rather than something you remember only when you’re thirsty.

I especially like having a water bottle that makes it easy to see how much I’ve actually had.

You don’t need a fancy bottle, of course. The important thing is finding something you’ll actually use.

3. Don’t Make Lunch All About Carbs

There’s nothing wrong with eating carbohydrates. Your body needs them.

The problem is that a lunch that’s mostly refined carbohydrates and doesn’t contain much protein or fiber may leave you feeling hungry and sluggish later.

Instead, try thinking about your lunch as a combination of:

Protein + vegetables or fruit + a quality carbohydrate + some healthy fat

For example:

  • Chicken + vegetables + rice
  • Turkey sandwich + fruit + vegetables
  • Taco bowl with meat, beans and vegetables
  • Greek yogurt + fruit + nuts
  • Leftover chicken and roasted vegetables

You don’t have to eat “perfectly.”

Just try to make your meals a little more balanced.

4. Move for 5–10 Minutes

When you’re tired, the last thing you may want to do is exercise.

But you don’t need a 45-minute workout.

Sometimes a 5–10 minute walk is enough to break up the afternoon slump and get you moving again.

Walk around the block.

Walk around your house.

Do a few stretches.

Put on one song and move.

The goal isn’t to burn a bunch of calories.

It’s simply to get out of your chair and change what your body is doing.

And if you’re working toward getting stronger, these little movement breaks can complement your regular strength-training routine.

5. Consider Creatine

Creatine isn’t just for bodybuilders.

It’s a naturally occurring compound involved in energy production, particularly in muscle. It’s also one of the more extensively studied sports supplements.

For women who are interested in maintaining muscle and strength as they get older, creatine may be worth learning more about.

It’s not an afternoon energy drink, and it’s not going to magically eliminate fatigue.

Think of it more as one potential tool to support strength, muscle and physical performance as part of an overall healthy routine.

As with any supplement, it’s a good idea to talk with your healthcare professional if you have medical conditions or take medications.

6. Don’t Ignore Your Sleep

If you’re consistently exhausted during the day, it can be tempting to keep adding things to your morning routine.

More coffee.

More supplements.

More caffeine.

But sometimes the answer starts the night before.

How much sleep are you actually getting?

Are you staying on your phone until bedtime?

Is your bedroom comfortable and dark?

Are you going to bed at roughly the same time?

And if you’re getting enough hours of sleep but still feel exhausted most days, that’s worth paying attention to rather than simply trying to cover it up with caffeine.

Magnesium is another supplement people often consider as part of their nighttime routine.

Again, magnesium isn’t a magic sleep cure, but getting adequate magnesium is important for normal body function.

7. Have an Afternoon Snack Plan

This one might be especially important if your afternoon crash comes with major cravings.

You know the feeling.

You’re tired.

You’re stressed.

It’s 3:30 PM.

Suddenly the cookies, chips or candy sound very important. 😂

Instead of relying on willpower when you’re already tired and hungry, have a few easy options available.

Try:

  • Greek yogurt and berries
  • Apple with peanut butter
  • Cottage cheese and fruit
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Veggies and hummus
  • A protein-rich snack

The goal isn’t to never eat something fun.

It’s to make sure you’re not constantly finding yourself starving, exhausted and surrounded by junk food.

A little planning can make those decisions much easier.

You Don’t Have to Fix Everything at Once

If you’re struggling with afternoon energy, don’t try all seven things tomorrow.

Pick one.

Maybe it’s drinking more water.

Maybe it’s adding protein to breakfast.

Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk after lunch.

Maybe it’s having a better afternoon snack ready before the cravings hit.

Small habits may not feel impressive, but they’re often much easier to maintain than trying to completely reinvent your life.

And that’s really what Simple Energy Today is about.
